At 32, Robert Malm can look back on having completed his very own Tour de France. The powerful striker with an eye for goal has, after all, played for no fewer than 10 clubs in the country since 1991. The first three of those years were spent with RC Lens, but thereafter he became something of a football nomad, moving on to Fecamp for two seasons and then spending one each at Saint-Brieuc, Lorient – where he scored 16 goals – and Toulouse, where he didn’t hit the net quite so regularly. A loan spell at Valence then followed before Malm’s services were sought on a permanent basis by Gueugnon, who promptly sold him on within the year Wasquehal. It’s only recently that he’s settled down again, spending three successful seasons with Grenoble before packing his bags for the final time (to date) during season 2004/05. Brest was his destination on this occasion and the move Brittany certainly appears to have done the trick, with Malm scoring 20 goals thus far to book his place at Germany. It represents a remarkable windfall for the Dunkirk-born striker, who had never before featured in a Togo squad despite the fact that both his parents hailed from the country. Otto Pfister will be hoping to draw on his vast and varied experience come the tournament itself.
